History
The history of LA Kush Cake
LA Kush Cake is Seed Junky Genetics’ cross of Wedding Cake and Kush Mints, from Los Angeles. No source dates its release, but it was in state lab testing by Mar 2019, won the personal-use flower category at the 2019 Emerald Cup and has since become the top-selling strain in Alaska.1,2,3,4,5

Why it spread
It came from a breeder at the center of the Cake wave. Leafly calls Los Angeles’ Seed Junky Genetics longtime industry legends now dominating the legal game, the breeder’s Wedding Cake was Leafly’s Strain of the Year in 2019, and Leaf Magazines describes a huge wave of Cake washing across the country in the late 2010s.1,8,9
Then it traveled. By 2022 Seed Junky was selling limited runs of clones or seeds in California’s legal market and through seed banks, other clone sellers were making their own, and large-scale growers sold eighths at about half the breeder’s price; Leafly found it on sale from Phoenix to Detroit, Boston and Maine.1 SeedFinder lists Cookies, Jungle Boys, Glass House Brands and Liberty Health Sciences among Seed Junky’s partner brands, and Jungle Boys bred two crosses from it, LA Baker and Jungle Mints.11,15,16
The disputed parts of the story
- Breeder: Seed Junky Genetics in every account; Leafly’s strain page adds Liberty Health Sciences (see genetics).10,11,17
- Date: no source gives the year it was bred. The earliest records we found are a Washington lab test from Mar 2019 in our data and the 2019 Emerald Cup.2,3
- Kush Mints’ breeder: Seed Junky per SeedFinder and Leaf Magazines, Mr. Nice Seeds per Leafly.7,8,18
- The 2019 award went to a grower’s entry in the personal-use category, not to the breeder: Leafly’s 2022 article says an LA Kush Cake grower took home the award.1,3
