Genetics

Is LA Kush Cake indica or sativa? Its genetics and family tree

LA Kush Cake is an indica-leaning hybrid: a cross of Wedding Cake, Seed Junky Genetics’ Triangle Kush × Animal Mints cut, and Kush Mints, a cross of Animal Mints and Bubba Kush.1,2,3,4 Both parents are children of Animal Mints, so it carries that line twice.5 Leafly and Weedmaps call it indica-dominant and SeedFinder an indica; AllBud lists it as an even 50/50.1,6,7,8

The two parents

Wedding Cake is Seed Junky Genetics’ cross of Triangle Kush and Animal Mints, also known as Triangle Mints #23 and Pink Cookies. Leafly calls it an indica-hybrid with mostly calming effects, and it was Seed Junky’s first Leafly Strain of the Year, in 2019.2,3 Its own disputed lineage is covered in its guide at weddingcakestrain.com.

Kush Mints, also sold as Kush Mintz, is a cross of Animal Mints and Bubba Kush that Leafly lists as 50% sativa and 50% indica, with a minty, cookie-like aroma.4 Leaf Magazines writes that Kush Mints helped launch Seed Junky, and SeedFinder credits the cross to Seed Junky’s breeders, but Leafly’s page says it was bred by Mr. Nice Seeds.4,14,15 Its indica parent, Bubba Kush, emerged just after 1996, according to Leafly.16

Animal Mints, a cross of Animal Cookies and SinMint Cookies, is the common thread: Leafly lists Wedding Cake and Kush Mints as its children, so LA Kush Cake descends from it through both parents.5

Who bred it: the accounts

Every source names Seed Junky Genetics; Leafly’s strain page adds a second name.

SeedFinder lists Liberty Health Sciences among the brands Seed Junky works with through partnerships, alongside Cookies, Jungle Boys and Glass House Brands; no source we found explains its part in LA Kush Cake.7

Seed Junky Genetics

Seed Junky was founded and is led by the breeder known as J Beezy, who has never released his full name; Leaf Magazines places the company in a 50,000-square-foot converted rocket factory in Northridge, California.7,14

How indica is it?

Most sources call LA Kush Cake indica-leaning, but they put it differently. Leafly calls it indica-dominant with mostly calming effects, and its 100 best strains list says it leans heavily toward the indica side; Weedmaps says indica-dominant hybrid, and SeedFinder files Seed Junky’s version as an indica.1,6,7,18 AllBud is the outlier, at 50% indica and 50% sativa.8 Seed sellers label their feminized versions indica-dominant (Crop King, ILGM) or mostly indica (Seed Supreme).19,20,21

Which parent was the mother?

The sources do not say. Leafly, AllBud and Seed Supreme write the cross as Wedding Cake × Kush Mints, while Weedmaps, SeedFinder and Crop King write Kush Mints × Wedding Cake; SeedFinder’s genealogy marks both parents as Seed Junky strains.1,6,7,8,11,19,21

Cuts, numbered labels and seeds

Leafly lists LA Kush Cake #11 among the strain’s other names without explaining the number.1 In state lab records, 87 of the 770 tests on this site carry a number after the name (#2, #4, #5, #6, #7 and #8), 60 from Michigan and 27 from Washington; our matching treats a bare number as a lot code, so they count as LA Kush Cake.22

Seed Junky’s own LA Kush Cake was never sold as feminized seeds, SeedFinder lists no other breeder’s version under the name, and it adds that the strain is no longer listed on Seed Junky’s website.7,23 In 2022, Leafly reported that Seed Junky sold limited runs of clones or seeds in California’s legal market and through seed banks, with Neptune Seedbank offering packs for $550, and that other clone sellers made their own LA Kush Cake clones.17 Crop King, ILGM and Seed Supreme now sell feminized seeds under the name; these are the sellers’ own versions.7,19,20,21

What our lab data adds

Strict matching leaves some results out. We excluded 73 results across all product types (35 of them flower) whose names did not match exactly, among them names with a word in front, such as “WhiteCloud LA Kush Cake Marijuana/Flower Bud” (21), and 8 that name a cross, such as “LA Kush Cake x Kush Mintz Flower”; none of them count toward the 770 tests on this site.22 Names spelled with periods do count: 51 of the 770 tests are labelled “L.A. Kush Cake”.22
